Marie Wilkinson BSc, Dip. NurSc, RM

My journey began in the North of England where I trained first as a registered nurse and then a registered midwife.

My midwifery practice spanning the last twenty-five years includes home & community, birth centres and hospital high risk facilities. Because UK midwifery has been a recognised and licensed profession since 1902 (I have not been around that long), midwives are the primary health care lead in maternity services and care for both high and low risk births. In high risk pregnancy we worked closely with multidisciplinary teams.

In May 2002, I moved with my sons to Calgary and was employed as the Assistant Patient Care Manager on the labour and delivery unit at the Foothills Medical Centre. I became a registered midwife here in Alberta in 2006 and practised midwifery with my partner Diane Rach out of Birth Partnership in Calgary. I am also an instructor with the Neonatal Resuscitation Program and the Emergency Skills Program.

When I moved to Okotoks, I was very happy to become a team member working within the Low Risk Maternity Unit Team at High River Hospital, working alongside a group of like minded colleagues who believe birth is a normal life event that should take place in your home community. This has been a good fit for me as it is reminiscent of my UK roots where midwives are very much seen as a member of their local community having the privilege of delivering families of babies.

It is my hope that through Foothills Midwifery, I will be able to offer midwifery care to families in my local community and to watch the families I work with, grow and flourish around me.
